Man and Van Kirkwall
Norse history and St Magnus Cathedral give Kirkwall its centre of gravity. A good move here still needs island planning.

Van Support Around Kirkwall, Hatston and Orkney Routes
Kirkwall is the main town on Orkney Mainland, with the older centre around Albert Street and Broad Street, harbour activity at the town side, the larger Hatston ferry and cruise area to the north, and the airport road to the east. For van work, that mix means the address is only half the story. The timing, loading point and onward route matter just as much.
Town-centre streets need careful stopping notes
Kirkwall’s older shopping streets, lanes and closes can make small jobs feel bigger than expected. A few boxes from a flat, shop stock from a town-centre unit, or furniture from above a business may involve a short carry from a legal stopping point rather than loading at the doorway.
Cruise days, school times and local shopping periods can also change how easy it is to get close. A van that can wait sensibly for ten minutes may be fine for a light collection. A larger move needs clearer planning, especially if the stairs turn tightly, the entrance is shared, or goods need moving through a close before they reach the street.
Hatston, ferries and island handovers
Hatston brings a different type of job. Ferry-linked work can involve check-in times, commercial traffic, passengers, larger vehicles and goods being handed over rather than moved straight from house to house. If the job connects with Aberdeen, Lerwick or another island route, the enquiry should say who is meeting the van, what time the goods can be released and whether there is any waiting space.
The town also has ordinary delivery jobs that should not be overcomplicated. A shop pickup, university move-outs, small office item or local house-to-house run may be simple once the loading point is known. The risk is assuming every Kirkwall address has the same space, when a wide road, a harbour-side stop and a narrow old street are three different jobs.
Routes across Mainland Orkney
Kirkwall links out to the rest of Mainland Orkney, so a delivery towards Finstown, Stromness, Stenness, Deerness or a rural address can involve farm tracks, gates, exposed roads and poor turning space. That is not a reason to overcomplicate it. It just needs to be said before the van sets off.
Matching the job to the right option
VanHub UK is useful as a directory and booking-assistance route, not as a guaranteed local fleet. Some customers may find someone suitable and contact them directly. Others may need help looking at wider options. For Kirkwall, the enquiry should include the exact loading point, ferry or no ferry, stairs, carry distance, item size, weather-sensitive items and any island or mainland collection details.
