The Complete Checklist for Moving House in the UK
A practical UK moving house checklist covering packing, access, van size, insurance checks, utilities, parking and move-day preparation.

Moving house is easier when the boring details are handled before the van arrives. Most problems come from late packing, poor access, wrong van size, loose fragile items, delayed keys or nobody being clear about who is lifting what.
From a driver’s point of view, the worst moves are not always the biggest ones. They are the ones where the boxes are half packed, the bed is still assembled, nobody has checked parking and the item list keeps growing while the van is outside.
This checklist is written for normal UK house moves, flat moves, room moves and smaller loads where you may be choosing between a full removal company, a man and van driver or doing it yourself. If the move is only a few bulky items, a single item collection may be a better fit than treating it like a full house move.
Four to six weeks before moving day
Start by reducing the load. The less you move, the less time the job usually takes. Sell usable items, donate what is still good, and separate rubbish early. If the clear-out creates bulky waste, read the rubbish removal vs skip hire guide before assuming repeated tip runs are cheaper.
Make a room-by-room item list
Measure large furniture, especially sofas, wardrobes and beds
Check whether anything needs dismantling
Take photos of awkward items and access points
Decide whether you need one driver, customer help or a two-person team
This is also the right time to compare options. A larger move may suit private removals support. A student room or shared house move may sit better under student removals. A single sofa, fridge or wardrobe may be better handled as one bulky collection.
Two to three weeks before the move
Get proper packing materials. Weak boxes, loose bags and open crates slow the job down. Use strong boxes, tape, labels, bubble wrap, furniture blankets if needed and mattress covers where sensible. Fragile goods should be packed before collection day, not wrapped while the driver is waiting. The fragile item packing guide covers the basics.
Check parking and access at both addresses. A van outside the door is one job. A van parked two streets away because of permit bays, narrow roads or blocked access is another. Tell the driver about stairs, lifts, long carries, gates, loading bays, height restrictions and timed access.
One week before the move
Confirm the van size and team size. A move can look small until the beds, mattresses, boxes, appliances and loose bags are counted properly. If you are unsure, compare your load with the van size guide before booking. Guessing low to save money can backfire if the job needs extra trips.
Dismantle large furniture where needed. Empty drawers. Disconnect appliances safely. Defrost freezers. Drain washing machines. Keep screws, bolts and brackets in labelled bags. If the driver is expected to help with basic dismantling, agree that before the day.
The day before moving
Pack an essentials bag with chargers, medication, documents, keys, basic tools, tea, toiletries and a change of clothes. Keep valuables, passports, jewellery and irreplaceable documents with you. Do not send them loose in the van.
Message the driver with final access details, contact numbers and parking notes. Confirm whether anyone will be helping carry. If heavy furniture is involved, read the heavy furniture moving guide and check whether the job realistically needs two people.
Moving day
Be fully packed before the driver arrives. The job should be loading and moving, not finishing drawers, taping boxes or deciding what goes. Point out fragile items, awkward furniture, priority boxes and anything already damaged.
At the old address, take meter readings and check cupboards, lofts, sheds, garages and under-stair spaces. At the new address, direct boxes to the right rooms early. That saves repeated carrying once the van is empty.
Final checks before booking
Before accepting a quote, confirm what the driver is providing: van size, number of people, arrival time, loading help, basic tools, blankets, straps, trolleys, waiting time and insurance position. Goods in Transit and Public Liability cover can vary between drivers, so check directly before the move.
Before linking the move to a driver, also check the practical blockers. The access guide, insurance guide and van size guide cover the three things that usually change a quote once the driver sees the job properly.
VanHub UK helps turn the move into a clear request so suitable independent drivers can price the real job. Send the inventory, photos, postcodes, access notes and preferred date through the private removals page if the job is a proper home move.
