Addlestone Looks Easy Until The Van Is On The Street

Addlestone is suburban Surrey, so a lot of jobs look straightforward at first. Residential roads, driveways, decent access and the M25 close by. Plenty of the time, that is exactly what you get.

But not every Addlestone job is a neat driveway load.

The older streets around the High Street and Station Road can be tighter than the postcode suggests. Victorian and Edwardian terraces, narrow hallways, front doors close to the pavement, and on-street parking that decides where the van can actually sit. It is not a nightmare, but it is not the same as backing onto a clear driveway and loading straight through the front door.

That difference matters with furniture. A sofa, wardrobe or fridge freezer coming out of an older terrace is a different job from the same item coming out of a detached house with space at the front. The distance might be short, but if the hallway is tight and the van is parked down the road, the time changes.

The newer estates off Simplemarsh Road, Liberty Lane and around the old Crouch Oak area bring a different sort of problem. The houses are often easier inside, but the roads can be awkward for vans. Tight bends, speed bumps, parked cars on both sides and cul-de-sacs where turning a long-wheelbase van becomes a slow five-point turn while everyone watches from their kitchen window.

That is the bit people do not always put on the form. “Plenty of space outside” can mean plenty of space for a car, not a van with both doors open.

New Haw comes up often enough as well. The streets off Woodham Lane are mostly post-war residential and usually workable for loading, but you still need to think about the route in. The railway bridge on Station Road has a low clearance and a weight limit, so it can matter if the driver is cutting through rather than routing around.

Town-centre jobs need a bit more planning. Parking around Station Road and the High Street is pay and display, and the smaller car parks can fill during the week. For a shop clearance or a flat above a premises, you need a loading spot that is close enough to be useful. If the van ends up tucked away in a car park while the job is on the High Street, the whole job becomes a carry.

The motorway access looks like the easy bit. Junction 11 of the M25 is only a few minutes south via the A317, and the M3 is reachable through the same wider road network or down through Weybridge.

The problem is timing.

Finish a job at half three on a weekday and you can lose the clean exit before you have even left the area properly. The van may be loaded, doors shut, customer happy, and then you are sitting in traffic near junction 11 wondering why a simple local job has eaten the afternoon.

For Addlestone, the van choice depends on the actual address. A long-wheelbase van is useful where there is volume and room to turn. A smaller van can make more sense on tighter estates, older terraces or jobs where the load is awkward rather than huge. If there are stairs, narrow halls or heavy items, two people are usually worth more than extra van length.

The useful details are simple:

• Can the van stop directly outside?

• Is it driveway loading or street loading?

• Are there stairs, tight halls or narrow front doors?

• Is the road suitable for a long-wheelbase van?

• Is the property on an estate with tight bends or cul-de-sacs?

• Does the job need to avoid school-run or M25 traffic?

Addlestone looks simple on a quote because it has the right ingredients: suburbs, driveways, good roads and motorway access.

But the job is still won or lost at the address. Driveway space, hallway width, parked cars, turning room and timing around the M25 will decide whether it is a quick load or half a day gone.
